everyone, especially those with prior knee injuries, is wise to keep their knees aligned over their ankles in lunging poses. when trying new postures, we often let our knees move sideways, over the arches of our feet or our outer ankle bones; this can stress the knee ligaments and make them vulnerable. remember to keep your front shin vertical and try to keep your knee from wobbling laterally.
when you lunge, keep your front heel firmly planted on the floor. if that heel lifts, you might be lunging too deeply for today. take it easy and keep trying.
in general, keep the entire surface of your foot in contact with the floor and equally weighted. if you're rolling to one side or the other, chances are that you should focus on keeping the four corners of your feet (inner and outer heel, bases of big and little toes) solidly down.
